Player Ratings: Arsenal 5-0 Porto

Manuel Almunia – 7 – Cleared danger with a flying punch 20 mins in. Fluffed clearance allowed Hulk a chip at goal.

Bacary Sagna – 8 – Negated the threat of Varela well and even got a couple of crosses on target.

Sol Campbell – 8 – Strong in the tackle and header as you’d expect, but soft backpass almost played in Porto in first half – had to be rescued by Vermaelen.

Thomas Vermaelen – 8 – Booked for an unecessary foul on Falcao in midfield.

Gael Clichy – 8 – Confident whether facing Hulk or Varela. Back to his best.

Samir Nasri – 9 – Thrived on the responsibility of midfield. Threaded the through ball in that led to Bendtner’s goal. Blocked a Rodriguez header on the line. Won the game for Arsenal after dancing through three Porto defenders and smashing his shot in past the keeper and in off the far post. Cesc who? A man of the match performance. Replaced on 73 minutes for the more defensive Denilson.

Alexandre Song – 8 – Ever reliable in front of the back four. Allowed Nasri to get forward with confidence.

Abou Diaby – 7 – Volleyed narrowly over from a corner in the first half. As well as his technique, he gave the side strength and height in midfield.

Andrey Arshavin – 9 – Denied a back post header by Helton in first 10 minutes, then bravely contested a 50-50 with Helton to provide the opener. Worked hard in defence and attack. Beat three men with dazzling goal to lay on Bendtner’s second. Missed an easy chance provided by Nasri to make it 3-0. Dazzling pace provided the platform for Eboue’s goal on the counter.

Nicklas Bendtner – 9 – What a turnaround – a hat-trick of goals after a hat-trick of misses against Burnley. Worked hard and held the ball up well all game. Scored the opener with a poachers goal and had another simple tap in for his second. Almost scored his third with a curling effort just before the break. Booked for scything Fucile.

Tomas Rosicky – 7 – Neat and tidy touched in first half. Taken off with half an hour to go for Eboue.
Substitutes

Theo Walcott – N/A – Replaced Arshavin on 77 minutes.

Emmanuel Eboue – 8 – Replaced Rosicky on 60 minutes. Finished a lighning counter-attack by rounding the keeper and sliding it in with his left. Quick feet earned the penalty.

Denilson – N/A –  On for man-of-the-match Samir Nasri on 73 minutes.

PORTO

Helton – 6 – Acrobatically denied Arshavin a headed goal in first 10 minutes. Not at fault for any of the goals – that was the fault of his defence and a tribute to Arsenal’s attacking play.

Pereira – 5 – Booked for crunching foul on Eboue.

Rolando – 4 – All at sea for most of the game.

Bruno Alves – 4 – Wilted under pressure from Nicklas Bendtner. He must have been expecting the Burnley Bendtner.

Fucile – 3 – Struggled at right-back. Couldn’t cope with Arshavin’s pace and trickery. Hauled down Eboue for the penalty.

Raul Meireles – 6 – Worked tirelessly but too often left the Porto defence exposed in search of the away goal.

Nuno André Coelho – 5 – Bamboozled by Arshavin’s quick feet for Arsenal’s second. Replaced at half-time by Rodriguez

Ruben Micael – 7 – Looked bright but was unable to reproduce form from home leg.

Varela – 6 – Great pace but no final ball. Shackled by Arsenal’s full-backs.

Falcao – 7 – A real livewire. Booked after going through the back of Song’s legs. Had a good chance at the start of second half but powered shot straight at Almunia.

Hulk – 6 – Hurt Sagna with a meaty challenge. Had a chance when Almunia botched his kick but his chip was off target. Snapshot on 40 minutes but it was straight into Almunia’s midriff. Disappointing considering the hype.

Substitutes
Freddy Guarín – N/A – Replaced by Ruben Micael on 77 mins

Mariano Nicolas Gonzalez – N/A – replaced Varela on 77 mins

Cristian Rodríguez – 6 – replaced Coelho at half-time. Almost scored with a powerful header from a corner but was blocked on the line by Nasri.
